Pizza Styles By City

Pizza almost always consists of sauce, dough and toppings. Depending on what city you’re in, the similarities might stop there. These are some of the most popular pizzas around the United States.

This pizza was created in the 1940s by Pizzeria Uno. It is a true deep dish pizza. It is very thick, and it takes a while for it to thoroughly cook. The toppings are placed on top of the dough, and then the tomato sauce is placed on top of that. This is done so that the cheese and other toppings don’t burn before the dough has cooked. If you want to try this pizza, Pizzeria Uno is still in business. Pequod’s Pizza is another excellent choice. It also has other food items available like pizza bread and meatball sandwiches.

New York
The pizza from New York is pretty famous throughout the world. New York style pizza was first made sometime in the early 1900s. A lot of pizza restaurants do try to take credit for the creation of it. Basically, it is a thin pizza. It is crunchy, and it only has a small amount of tomato sauce on it. Large amounts grated mozzarella is place on top of it. One of the things that sets this pizza apart from others is the size. Slices are so large that they usually need to be folded over to eat them. If you are feeling hungry, there certainly are a lot of places to buy pizza in New York. One of the most well known places is Lucali. They only serve pizzas and calzones, but the restaurant is almost always filled with customers. Santa Panza is also known for its pizza. The pizzas are cooked in a wood-burning oven, and they are topped with things like walnuts and Gorgonzola.

Detroit style pizza deviates from the normally round pizza shape. It has a square shape, and it is similar to the Chicago style pizza. It has a deep dish crust and the sauce is placed on top of it. The crust does tend to have caramelized edges. This is because the pan it’s baked in is very well oiled. If you are looking for a pizza late night, head over to Pepe Z’s. They serve pizza until the wee hours of the morning. In additional to the Detroit style pizzas, make sure you opt for some of the house favorites like the Taco Truck pizza. It’s topped with things like pickled jalapenos and salsa verde. Another popular place to grab a pizza pie is Cloverleaf. They claim to have created the Detroit style pizza back in the 1940s.

St. Louis
Supposedly, this pizza was created in the 1960s by Imo’s Pizzeria. This pizza is very thin. This is because it is made without any yeast. This isn’t the only thing that makes it unique. Instead of being topped with mozzarella, Provel cheese is used. It gives it a somewhat smoky flavor. Pi Pizzeria is where many of the locals go to grab a slice of pizza. They also have a second location in Washington D.C. Felix’s might not look like much from the outside, but this pizzeria is known to have some of the best pizza in the area. You can buy pizza by the slice, or you can buy a whole pie.

As you can see, pizza can vary a lot based on region. The pizzas mentioned above are just some of the different varieties available. Which style pizza do you prefer?
