As the capital of Tennessee, Nashville is the second biggest city in the state. It is the center of amazing musical talent, a national hub for the health care industry, and is home to some very well-known colleges and universities. Country music is oftentimes instantly associated with the city of Nashville. With respect to country music, many popular tourist attractions include: the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Belcourt Theatre, and Ryman Auditorium. The Ryman was actually home to the infamous Grand Ole Opery until 1974 when the show moved to its own home down the road, which is appropriately called the Grand Old Opery House. Considered a country music and American icon, this establishment hosts weekly performances of the most famous country stars. Many performers consider it a great honor to perform here, and in turn, attract people from all over the country. Some stars that have performed there include: Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, and Carrie Underwood. A popular hot-spot in the Nashville that embodies the country music theme is called the Wildhorse Saloon. Located in the downtown area of the city, it's a venue that showcases live music and hosts a huge country-line dancing dance floor. Nashville also was the home of popular television shows Hee Haw and Pop! Goes the Country and continues to host the annual CMA Music Festival. In addition to the culture of country music, Nashville also is home to Vanderbilt University, which was reported as the 17th top academic institution in the country by U.S. News and World Report. It houses different programs that specialize in education, law, medicine, and nursing. It was founded by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1873; although he had never even visited the southern part of the country, his hope was that the establishment of the university and his $1 million endowment would help bring structure and support to this region proceeding the Civil War. Acting as the home to incredible musical talent and historical venues, visitors come from all over the country to experience these sites firsthand. The educational institutions in Nashville also bring a great deal of culture to the city. The marriage of these two things, in addition to the restaurants and architectural landmarks, make this an amazing southern vacation destination for all types of visitors!
